Drill a small test hole in an inconspicuous area (behind furniture, inside a closet):

  • Wood fibers → Drywall with studs (good)
  • Gray dust, some resistance → Plaster (use caution)
  • Red dust, hard resistance → Brick (masonry bits needed)
  • Gray dust, extreme resistance → Concrete (hammer drill required)

3. The Magnet Test

Run a strong magnet along the wall. It will stick to drywall screws or metal studs. No attraction + solid feel = plaster or masonry. This helps locate studs behind drywall without a stud finder.
