How High Should You Hang a Picture?

A common mistake is hanging art too high. The professional rule:

The center of the artwork should align roughly with eye level — typically “center to your nose” while standing.

This standard is used in galleries and museums. Adjustments may be needed above furniture, fireplaces, or staircases — but this rule creates visual balance in most Boston homes.

Step-by-Step DIY Picture Hanging Method

1. Hold the frame at your desired height.
2. Mark the top of the frame lightly with pencil.
3. Measure from the top of the frame down to the wire hook (usually 2–3 inches).
4. Transfer that measurement to the wall.
5. Make a small upside-down “T” where the hook will sit.

Align the bottom of your hook with the bottom of the upside-down “T.” This prevents guesswork and keeps your artwork level.
